One acre is about 43,560 sq ft or 4,047 m². That is far bigger than most UK gardens, but common for US suburban and rural lots, and for UK homes with paddocks or large grounds. At this size, mowing time, battery capacity and cutting width matter much more than on a small lawn.
The key rule: do not buy a mower rated for exactly your lawn size. Ratings assume flat ground, short grass and long daily mowing hours. A mower rated for 1.5 acres will keep a 1 acre lawn tidy with time to spare; one rated for exactly 1 acre may struggle in peak growing season. All our picks are wire-free, because laying a boundary wire around an acre is a big job. See our overall best robot lawn mowers for smaller lawns.

How we chose
Our editorial team has not tested these mowers. Instead we compared four kinds of evidence:
- Manufacturer specs: rated lawn area, slope rating, navigation type, cutting width and height, checked on the brand's own product pages or a major retailer listing.
- Independent reviews and lab results: Consumer Reports (which runs mowers on a test lawn of about 2,100 sq ft / 195 m² with slopes, damp grass and long grass), Reviewed, Gardeners' World, TechRadar, Expert Reviews, T3 and BGR.
- Patterns in owner feedback: recurring complaints such as getting stuck, signal loss under trees or wheels scuffing turf.
- Price and availability in both the US and UK in October 2026. Where we could not confirm a price in one market, we say so.
For this list we required a manufacturer area rating of at least 0.75 acre (about 3,000 m²), wire-free operation and evidence from at least one independent review or a detailed manufacturer spec sheet.
What the best robot lawn mower for 1 acre needs
- Area headroom. Aim for a rating of 1.25 to 1.5 acres (5,000 to 6,000 m²) for a 1 acre lawn.
- Wide cut. A 40 cm or wider deck covers ground roughly twice as fast as a 20 cm one.
- Wire-free navigation. Over 4,000 m², laying wire is a weekend job and every break means walking the whole loop.
- 4G connectivity. Home Wi-Fi rarely reaches the far end of an acre.
- Multi-zone maps. Large plots often have separate areas linked by paths or drives.
- All-wheel drive if any part is sloped or bumpy.
How long does a robot take to mow 1 acre?
Robots mow little and often, so they do not cut an acre in one go. As a guide, Ecovacs quotes its GOAT A3000 LiDAR Pro at 250 to 400 m² (2,700 to 4,300 sq ft) per hour. At that rate a 4,047 m² acre takes roughly 10 to 16 hours of mowing, spread across several days and charging breaks. Wider-cut machines like the Navimow X4 series and LUBA 3 AWD cover ground faster. Plan for the robot to run most days during the growing season.
Lawn size: acres, square feet and square metres
| Lawn size (US) | Square feet | Square metres (UK) | Rough picture |
|---|
| 1/8 acre | 5,400 sq ft | 500 m² | A large back garden |
| 1/4 acre | 10,900 sq ft | 1,000 m² | A large suburban lot |
| 1/2 acre | 21,800 sq ft | 2,000 m² | A bit over a quarter of a football pitch |
| 1 acre | 43,560 sq ft | 4,047 m² | Just over half a football pitch |
Quick maths: square metres x 10.76 = square feet. 1 acre is about 4,000 m².
For UK readers: 1 acre is 4,047 m², so a 5,000 m² rating is about 1.24 acres and 3,000 m² is about 0.74 acre.
Navigation on big properties
Older and cheaper robots follow a perimeter wire: a thin cable you peg around the edge of the lawn that tells the mower where to stop. Newer wire-free robots work out where they are in one of three ways:
- RTK GPS (Real-Time Kinematic): satellite positioning corrected to within a couple of centimetres, either by a small antenna you mount in the garden or by a correction signal sent over the mobile network (network RTK). Accurate in open lawns, but tall trees and buildings can block the signal.
- Vision: cameras and AI that recognise grass, edges and obstacles. No antenna, but they need daylight.
- LiDAR: a spinning laser sensor that builds a 3D map of your garden. Works under trees and in shade, day or night.
Most premium mowers now combine two or three of these so one can cover for another.
On large, open lots RTK is usually the most accurate option. Where big trees line the lawn, a hybrid that falls back to cameras or LiDAR keeps working when satellites are blocked.
Costs beyond the mower
- Garage or shelter for the dock, often sold separately (Expert Reviews puts the X430 at about £2,800 with shelter and secondary antenna).
- Reference station for Husqvarna EPOS in the UK (about £309 extra on the 435X AWD NERA).
- Replacement blades, which large lawns wear out faster.
- Any 4G or network RTK fees after a free period. Check per model.
A note for US buyers. On 28 July 2026 the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) added foreign-made "advanced robotic devices" to its Covered List, and its FAQ confirms robot lawn mowers count. According to the law firm K&L Gates and Techlicious, models that were already approved can still be imported and sold, and mowers you already own are not affected. The rule mainly blocks new foreign-made models from getting approval, so some newer models may be slow to reach US shops. UK buyers are not affected.
Frequently asked questions
What size robot mower do I need for 1 acre?
Choose one rated for 1.25 to 1.5 acres (about 5,000 to 6,000 m²), such as the Segway Navimow X450 or Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD 5000. The extra rating gives headroom for slopes, long grass and peak growth.
How long does it take a robot mower to cut 1 acre?
Roughly 10 to 16 hours of mowing, spread over several days, based on Ecovacs' quoted 250 to 400 m² per hour for the GOAT A3000. Wider-cut mowers are faster.
Can a robot mower handle 2 acres?
A few can. The Segway Navimow X390 is rated for 2.5 acres, and Reviewed lists the Yarbo Lawn Mower Pro for up to 6 acres. Expect to pay $4,500 or more.
What is the Rolls-Royce of robot lawn mowers?
Husqvarna's Automower AWD range is often seen as the premium, dealer-backed choice, with prices around £4,769 to £5,299 in the UK. Newer brands now match or beat it on slopes and navigation at about half the price.
Do I need a perimeter wire for an acre?
No. All the picks here are wire-free. On an acre, avoiding wire saves a lot of installation time and future repairs.
Is a 1 acre robot mower worth it?
If you currently spend one to two hours a week mowing, a $2,500 to $3,000 robot can pay back in time saved within a few seasons. See our cost and buying guide for the maths.
