Home Robot Guide: Every Type of Household Robot, Compared

The short answerA home robot is any robot built to help around the house, from robot vacuums and lawn mowers to self cleaning litter boxes and companion robots. In October 2026 the most useful ones do a single job well. General-purpose robot butlers, such as the 1X NEO humanoid ($20,000), are still US pre-orders.

What is a home robot?

A home robot is a machine that senses its surroundings and acts on its own, at least partly, to do a job in your house or garden. Most use sensors such as cameras or LiDAR (a laser sensor that maps your rooms) to find their way, and an app to set schedules. The big split is between single-task robots, which do one job very well, and general-purpose robots, which aim to do many jobs but are still early.

Robot butlers: what is real in 2026

The dream of a home robot that tidies, cooks and does the laundry is closer, but not here. 1X opened NEO pre-orders in October 2025 at $20,000, and says US deliveries start in 2026; as of early October 2026 we found no independent confirmation of customer deliveries. Figure 03 has no public price or orders, and Tesla Optimus is not for sale, with Musk pointing to the end of 2027 at the earliest. Details in our humanoid buying guide.

How much does a home robot cost?

  • Companion and desktop robots: roughly $160 to $500, rising to about $2,900 for Sony aibo.
  • Self cleaning litter boxes: about $99 to $899.
  • Robot vacuums, mowers and pool cleaners: wide ranges; see each guide for current prices.
  • Humanoid helpers: $20,000 or $499 a month for 1X NEO (pre-order).

Remember running costs: bags, liners, replacement brushes and subscriptions for cloud features.

Privacy and safety tips

  • Check whether the robot has cameras and microphones, and where video is stored.
  • Look for physical privacy shutters or a way to switch cameras off.
  • Ask whether staff can ever view or control the robot remotely. Some humanoid helpers use remote human operators.
  • Keep the app and firmware updated, and use a strong, unique password.
  • Supervise heavy or fast-moving robots around children and pets.

Frequently asked questions

What is a house robot?

A house robot, or home robot, is any robot that does a job in the home with little or no supervision. Common examples are robot vacuums, robot lawn mowers, pool cleaners, window cleaners and self cleaning litter boxes.

How much do NEO robots cost?

1X NEO costs $20,000 to buy or $499 a month on subscription, with a $200 refundable deposit. It is a US-only pre-order as of October 2026.

Can I buy a robot to do my housework?

Yes, for specific jobs. Robot vacuums, mowers, pool cleaners and litter boxes are mature products. A single robot that does all your housework is not yet available; the closest, 1X NEO, is a pre-order.

What are some good small robots for home use?

For practical help, a robot vacuum or self cleaning litter box. For fun and companionship, a small robot such as KEYi Loona (about $499) or a programmable kit like Petoi Bittle.

What is the most realistic robot right now?

For a pet, Sony aibo is widely seen as the most lifelike consumer robot. For human-like robots, humanoids such as the Unitree G1 can be bought for research, but home-ready humanoids are not yet in customers' homes.

Are home robots safe?

Most consumer home robots are low-risk appliances with safety sensors. Larger robots, such as humanoids and walking quadrupeds, are heavier and need more care. Privacy is the bigger everyday issue for robots with cameras.
