Robot mowers have become much cheaper and smarter over the last few years. Wire-free models that once cost thousands now start under $1,000 in the US and under £700 in the UK. But the sticker price is only part of the story. Lawn size, slopes, how the mower finds its way and the extras you need all change what you will really spend.
This guide uses real prices we checked at manufacturers and major retailers in October 2026, plus figures from Which?, Consumer Reports and independent reviews. We have not tested these mowers ourselves. When you are ready to choose, see our best robot lawn mower picks or the cheapest robot lawn mower list.

How much does a robot lawn mower cost? Prices by lawn size
The single biggest factor is lawn size. Manufacturers rate each model for a maximum area, in acres in the US and square metres in the UK (1 acre is about 4,047 m²). Bigger areas need bigger batteries, wider cutting decks and stronger motors, so prices rise with coverage.
- Small lawns (under 0.15 acre or 600 m²): around $800 to $1,000 or £600 to £1,000.
- Medium lawns (0.25 to 0.5 acre or 1,000 to 2,000 m²): around $1,000 to $2,500 or £1,000 to £2,300.
- Large lawns (around 1 acre or 4,000 m²): around $2,200 to $3,500 or £2,300 to £3,000.
- Very large lawns (2 acres and up): $4,000 and above.
Consumer Reports says the robot mowers in its 2026 ratings range from about $800 to more than $2,500. By comparison, it says many top-rated battery push mowers cost $400 to $800. Which? has tested robot mowers from under £400 to over £1,000.
Buy a mower rated a little above your lawn size. A mower working at its limit will run almost constantly and wear out sooner.
What makes some robot mowers cost more
- Navigation. Cheaper and older models follow a boundary wire pegged around the lawn. Wire-free models cost more and use RTK (satellite positioning corrected to within a few centimetres), LiDAR (a laser sensor that maps the garden) or cameras. Which? notes that models combining several systems are pricey but cope best with complex gardens.
- All-wheel drive. AWD models such as the Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD (80% slopes) and Navimow X430 (84%) cost more than two-wheel-drive mowers rated for around 30 to 50%.
- Cutting width and runtime. A 40 cm (16 in) deck finishes a big lawn far faster than an 18 cm (7 in) deck, and costs more.
- Brand and dealer support. Husqvarna generally charges more than Segway, Mammotion or Worx for similar coverage, partly for its dealer network.
- Edge trimming and extras. Edge blades, high-cut versions for tall grass and built-in 4G all add cost.
Hidden costs and running costs
Once you own a robot mower, it is cheap to run. But budget for these:
- Installation. Wire-free mowers are usually self-installed through an app. For boundary-wire models, Which? says installation kits can cost an extra £70 to £100, and some dealers charge to lay the wire. Eufy's buying guide puts professional installation at around $200 to $500 in the US, more for big properties. Ask for a quote first.
- Connectivity. Some mowers need a data plan for positioning or tracking. Segway's Connect+ service on the Navimow X430 is free for the first year, then $32.90 a year in the US, according to PCWorld. Mammotion includes three years of 4G on the LUBA mini 2 AWD. Husqvarna's V models need Wi-Fi across the lawn, or an optional 4G module (£175) or EPOS receiver (£280), according to Expert Reviews.
- Electricity. Small. Notebookcheck estimated about 12 kWh a month for a Navimow i210 in its scenario, including standby power. Eufy describes it as a few dollars a month.
- Blades. Most robot mowers use small razor-style blades that are cheap to replace. Check the price and availability for your model before buying.
- Batteries. Batteries wear out first. Which? says replacements can cost over £100, and it will not award a Best Buy to a mower without a replaceable battery.
- Accessories. A garage or shelter protects the mower from sun and rain. Segway sells the X430 with its Garage X for $2,848.99 in the US, about $350 more than the mower alone.
Can you rent a robot mower instead?
In the US, yes. Segway's Navimow Flex plan costs $100 a month for the i105n and $130 a month for the i110n, as of October 2026. It covers blades, support and repairs while you subscribe, and you can cancel by returning the mower. It is available in the 48 contiguous states.
Renting costs more than buying if you keep it for a full season: eight months at $100 is $800, the same as buying an i105 outright. It makes most sense as a trial before committing. We did not find a comparable plan from a major brand in the UK.
Are robot lawn mowers worth it?
For many homes, yes, but not all. Here is the honest trade-off.
Reasons a robot mower is worth it:
- It mows little and often, which keeps the grass at an even height instead of growing long between weekly cuts.
- It frees up time every week through the season.
- Running costs are low, with no fuel, oil or spark plugs.
- Clippings are mulched back into the lawn, so there is no bag to empty.
- It suits people who find a heavy mower hard to push.
Reasons it may not be:
- It costs two to five times more than a good battery push mower.
- You will still need to trim edges. Consumer Reports notes many models do not cut as close to fences as a regular mower.
- Steep, narrow or very cluttered gardens need expensive models.
- Which? warns that hedgehogs and other small wildlife are at risk. Avoid mowing at night and set the blades high.
- There is little independent data on how long wire-free models last. Manufacturer blogs claim 5 to 10 years with care, but these are not tested figures.
A simple test: if you spend more than an hour a week mowing for six months of the year, a mid-range robot mower pays you back in time within a season or two. If your lawn is tiny or you enjoy mowing, a push mower is better value.
How to pay less for a robot mower
- Buy in the off-season or on big sale days. Robot mowers are often discounted during sale events such as Prime Day and Black Friday. 9to5Toys tracked the Husqvarna 410 iQ falling from a $2,999 launch price to $1,549.99 on sale in early 2026.
- Do not overbuy. Match the rated area to your lawn, with a little headroom.
- Skip AWD on flat lawns. Two-wheel-drive models such as the Worx Vision Cloud 2WD cost hundreds less.
- Consider last year's model. When a new range launches, older versions are often discounted, though check they still get software updates.
US buyers should also know that a Federal Communications Commission rule from late July 2026 blocks approval of new foreign-made robotic devices, according to Consumer Reports. Models already approved can still be sold. This may limit new US launches, so do not wait for a new model that may not arrive.
Quick checklist before you buy
- Measure your lawn in acres or square metres.
- Note your steepest slope and any narrow passages between areas.
- Check tree cover. Heavy shade favours LiDAR or camera-based models.
- Check Wi-Fi or mobile signal across the lawn.
- Find an outdoor power socket for the charging station.
- Add installation, data plan and accessory costs to the price.
- Check the warranty and whether the battery can be replaced.
Then compare models in our robot lawn mower hub, or go straight to small gardens, slopes or large lawns.
Frequently asked questions
What is the least expensive robotic lawn mower?
Among well-known brands in October 2026, the Worx Landroid Vision Cloud WR303E at £599 is the cheapest wire-free model we found in the UK, and the Segway Navimow i105 at a $799 list price is a common US starting point. Sale prices and older wired models can be lower.
What are the negatives of robotic lawn mowers?
They cost more than push mowers, usually leave edges to trim, can struggle on steep or cluttered lawns, need a power socket outdoors, and can harm hedgehogs and other wildlife if run at night. Batteries also wear out and can cost over £100 to replace, according to Which?.
What is the lifespan of a robot lawn mower?
Manufacturers typically claim 5 to 10 years with good maintenance, with batteries needing replacement every few years. There is little independent long-term data, especially for newer wire-free models, so a good warranty matters.
Do robot lawn mowers cost a lot to run?
No. Electricity is a few dollars or pounds a month, and the main regular costs are replacement blades and, for some models, a connectivity plan after the free period ends.
How much does it cost to install a robot lawn mower?
Wire-free mowers are usually free to set up yourself through an app. Boundary-wire mowers may need an installation kit (£70 to £100, according to Which?) and dealers may charge to fit them; Eufy's guide suggests around $200 to $500 for professional installation in the US.
Are robot lawn mowers worth it for a small garden?
Often yes, because small-garden models are the cheapest, starting from around £600 or $800. If your lawn takes only a few minutes to mow, though, a battery push mower is much better value.
What is a robot lawn mower?
It is a battery-powered mower that cuts your grass on a schedule by itself, then returns to a charging station. It stays inside your lawn using a boundary wire or, on newer models, satellite positioning, cameras or a laser sensor.
