Small lawns are where robot mowers make the most sense for many people. A typical small garden or yard is cut quickly, so even a modest robot keeps it looking tidy every day. The trick is not to overspend: a $2,500 all-terrain machine rated for an acre is wasted on a 200 m² lawn.

Small gardens bring their own challenges, though: narrow side passages, lots of borders and obstacles packed close together, and often a fence or house blocking satellite signal. Below are our picks for lawns from 150 m² (about 1,600 sq ft) to 800 m² (about 0.2 acre). If your lawn is bigger, see the best robot lawn mowers overall.

  • Ideal Home's reviewer found about 15 cm left uncut along borders

Verdict: No dock, no app and no wire: you charge the battery, put it on the lawn and press go. Ideal Home called it brilliant for people who want no extras; expect to strim the edges.

How we chose

Our editorial team has not tested these mowers. Instead we compared four kinds of evidence:

  • Manufacturer specs: rated lawn area, slope rating, navigation type, cutting width and height, checked on the brand's own product pages or a major retailer listing.
  • Independent reviews and lab results: Consumer Reports (which runs mowers on a test lawn of about 2,100 sq ft / 195 m² with slopes, damp grass and long grass), Reviewed, Gardeners' World, TechRadar, Expert Reviews, T3 and BGR.
  • Patterns in owner feedback: recurring complaints such as getting stuck, signal loss under trees or wheels scuffing turf.
  • Price and availability in both the US and UK in October 2026. Where we could not confirm a price in one market, we say so.

For this list we focused on mowers rated between 150 m² and 1,500 m², and looked hard at features that matter in tight spaces: narrow-passage navigation, performance next to buildings and fences, and noise.

What to look for in the best robot lawn mower for small garden lawns

  • Right-sized rating. Pick a mower rated about 20% to 30% above your lawn, no more. You do not need acre-class power.
  • Navigation that copes with walls. Houses and fences can block satellites. Cameras, LiDAR or a hybrid that falls back on cameras work better in enclosed gardens.
  • Narrow passages. If front and back lawns connect by a side path, check the mower supports multi-zone maps and channels.
  • Noise. In close neighbourhoods, look for figures around 58 to 60 dB, like the Gardena SILENO minimo and Navimow i206.
  • Storage. A dockless mower like the OcuMow lives in the shed; docked mowers need a level spot near a socket.

Wire vs wire-free for small gardens

Older and cheaper robots follow a perimeter wire: a thin cable you peg around the edge of the lawn that tells the mower where to stop. Newer wire-free robots work out where they are in one of three ways:

  • RTK GPS (Real-Time Kinematic): satellite positioning corrected to within a couple of centimetres, either by a small antenna you mount in the garden or by a correction signal sent over the mobile network (network RTK). Accurate in open lawns, but tall trees and buildings can block the signal.
  • Vision: cameras and AI that recognise grass, edges and obstacles. No antenna, but they need daylight.
  • LiDAR: a spinning laser sensor that builds a 3D map of your garden. Works under trees and in shade, day or night.

Most premium mowers now combine two or three of these so one can cover for another.

In a small garden the wire is short, so installing it is less of a chore than on a big lawn. That is why wired models like the SILENO minimo still make sense here if budget matters most.

Is a robot mower worth it for a small garden?

A small lawn is usually quick to mow by hand, so the time saved is smaller than on a big plot. The case for a robot is more about convenience: the grass always looks freshly cut, there are no clippings to empty, and you never have to drag a mower through the house. If that appeals, a small-garden robot from around £299 (UK, dockless) or $799 (US, wire-free) is a reasonable buy.

A note for US buyers. On 28 July 2026 the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) added foreign-made "advanced robotic devices" to its Covered List, and its FAQ confirms robot lawn mowers count. According to the law firm K&L Gates and Techlicious, models that were already approved can still be imported and sold, and mowers you already own are not affected. The rule mainly blocks new foreign-made models from getting approval, so some newer models may be slow to reach US shops. UK buyers are not affected.

Frequently asked questions

Which robot lawn mower is best for small areas?

For most small lawns up to 600 m² we recommend the Segway Navimow i206 AWD. For flat lawns with clear edges, the Eufy E15 is the easiest to set up.

What is the smallest robot lawn mower available?

Among the models in this guide, the LawnMaster OcuMow 16 is the smallest, at 30 x 25 x 35 cm and 6.6 kg, rated for lawns up to 150 m². It has no dock or app.

What is the best lawnmower for small gardens?

If you want a robot, the Navimow i206 AWD or Eufy E15. If budget is tight, the Gardena SILENO minimo (wired) or LawnMaster OcuMow 16 (UK) cost under £400.

What are the downsides of using a robotic lawn mower in a small garden?

The cost per square metre is higher than for big lawns, edges still need trimming, and obstacles packed close together can confuse cheaper models. Satellite-only mowers may also struggle next to tall buildings.

Does Costco sell robotic lawn mowers?

Retailer ranges change often, so check your local Costco online. The models in this guide are widely sold through Amazon, Home Depot, Lowe's and Best Buy in the US, and Amazon, Currys and specialist dealers in the UK.

Do small robot mowers work on very small lawns under 100 m²?

Yes, but the value is lower. A dockless mower like the OcuMow 16 or a basic wired model is usually the most sensible choice at that size.
