Robot mowers used to start at well over a thousand dollars or pounds. Now there are sensible options for a few hundred, but the cheapest models cut corners: some have no dock, some need a boundary wire, and most are only rated for small lawns.
We looked for the lowest-priced mowers from recognised brands that still do the job, and we explain exactly what you give up at each price. Prices are from October 2026 and move a lot during sales. If your budget stretches further, our best robot lawn mowers list covers mid-range and premium picks.

How we chose
Our editorial team has not tested these mowers. Instead we compared four kinds of evidence:
- Manufacturer specs: rated lawn area, slope rating, navigation type, cutting width and height, checked on the brand's own product pages or a major retailer listing.
- Independent reviews and lab results: Consumer Reports (which runs mowers on a test lawn of about 2,100 sq ft / 195 m² with slopes, damp grass and long grass), Reviewed, Gardeners' World, TechRadar, Expert Reviews, T3 and BGR.
- Patterns in owner feedback: recurring complaints such as getting stuck, signal loss under trees or wheels scuffing turf.
- Price and availability in both the US and UK in October 2026. Where we could not confirm a price in one market, we say so.
For this list we ranked by price first, then dropped anything from unknown sellers or with no verifiable specs. Very cheap listings from unfamiliar brands on marketplaces were excluded because we could not confirm specs or after-sales support.
Is the cheapest robot lawn mower good enough?
It can be, if your lawn is small, flat and simple. Here is what you typically give up as the price drops:
- Under £300: no dock and no app (OcuMow 16). You start it by hand.
- £300 to £450: a dock and basic app, but a perimeter wire (SILENO minimo), or wire-free with an antenna to mount (GOAT O600).
- $549 to $850 / £700 to £800: wire-free with a full app, obstacle avoidance and, at the top end, all-wheel drive (Navimow i206 AWD).
- Around $1,000 / £1,000: LiDAR navigation that works under trees (MOVA LiDAX Ultra 1000, Dreame A1 Pro in the UK).
Wire vs wire-free on a budget
Older and cheaper robots follow a perimeter wire: a thin cable you peg around the edge of the lawn that tells the mower where to stop. Newer wire-free robots work out where they are in one of three ways:
- RTK GPS (Real-Time Kinematic): satellite positioning corrected to within a couple of centimetres, either by a small antenna you mount in the garden or by a correction signal sent over the mobile network (network RTK). Accurate in open lawns, but tall trees and buildings can block the signal.
- Vision: cameras and AI that recognise grass, edges and obstacles. No antenna, but they need daylight.
- LiDAR: a spinning laser sensor that builds a 3D map of your garden. Works under trees and in shade, day or night.
Most premium mowers now combine two or three of these so one can cover for another.
On a tight budget, a wired robot is still the cheapest docking option in the UK. For US buyers, entry wire-free RTK models from Anthbot, Ecovacs and Segway now cost less than many older wired models did.
When to buy for the lowest price
Robot mower prices swing a lot. In October 2026 several models were well below list price: Navimow listed the i206 AWD at $849 against $999 and the i210 AWD at $1,049 against $1,299, while PCMag reported Ecovacs' O1000 RTK at $664 in a deal. Spring launches, Prime Day and Black Friday are common discount periods. Check price-history tools before buying, and make sure any discount applies to the mower itself rather than a bundle.
Hidden costs on cheap robot mowers
- Garage or shelter, often extra.
- Replacement blades, a regular expense.
- Extension cables for antennas or docks.
- For wired models, spare wire and connectors for repairs.
- Check whether any app features need a subscription.
A note for US buyers. On 28 July 2026 the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) added foreign-made "advanced robotic devices" to its Covered List, and its FAQ confirms robot lawn mowers count. According to the law firm K&L Gates and Techlicious, models that were already approved can still be imported and sold, and mowers you already own are not affected. The rule mainly blocks new foreign-made models from getting approval, so some newer models may be slow to reach US shops. UK buyers are not affected.
Lawn sizes for budget mowers
Budget mowers are rated for small areas: 150 m² (about 1,600 sq ft) up to about 1,000 m² (0.25 acre, about 10,800 sq ft). For bigger lawns, the cheapest sensible option rises quickly; see our 1 acre guide.
Frequently asked questions
What is the least expensive robotic lawn mower?
Among recognised brands, the LawnMaster OcuMow 16 at around £279 to £299 in the UK. In the US, the cheapest wire-free model we would consider is the Anthbot M5 at around $549 to $629.
How much does a good robotic lawn mower cost?
A good wire-free mower for a small lawn costs around $799 to $1,000 / £699 to £1,000 in October 2026. Consumer Reports says the models in its ratings range from about $800 to over $2,500.
Are cheap robot lawn mowers worth buying?
Yes for small, simple lawns. They are less suited to slopes, complex layouts or tree-heavy gardens, where a mid-range wire-free or LiDAR model is worth the extra.
What is the disadvantage of a robotic lawn mower?
Cost, edges that still need trimming, trouble with long or wet grass, and the need to clear toys and debris. Budget models add narrower cuts and simpler navigation.
Does Costco sell robotic lawn mowers?
Ranges change, so check Costco online for your area. Budget models in this guide are widely sold through Amazon, Home Depot and Lowe's in the US, and Amazon, Screwfix, Currys and garden dealers in the UK.
Is there a good robot lawn mower under $1,000?
Yes. The Segway Navimow i206 AWD ($849), Navimow i105 ($799), Anthbot M5 ($549 to $629), Ecovacs GOAT O1000 RTK ($999) and MOVA LiDAX Ultra 1000 ($999) all come in at or under $1,000 in October 2026.
