Roomba Review 2026: The Line-up, the Bankruptcy and Whether to Buy

The short answerA Roomba is still worth considering in 2026, but it is no longer the automatic choice. iRobot emerged from Chapter 11 in January 2026 owned by its Chinese manufacturer Picea. Its newest models, led by the Roomba Max 875 Combo, finally match rivals on LiDAR mapping and self-washing docks, though reviewers say Roborock often offers more for the money.

Roomba is the name most people use for any robot vacuum. iRobot sold its first Roomba in 2002 and led the market for two decades. The last two years have been the most turbulent in the company's history: a failed takeover by Amazon, a bankruptcy filing, a sale to its own Chinese supplier and, in the US, a new federal rule that limits future robot imports.

This page explains what happened in plain English, what it means if you own or want a Roomba, and which current models are worth a look. We have not tested these robots. Our view is built from manufacturer specifications, independent reviews and lab results, and patterns in owner feedback, and we say where each claim comes from. If you are still choosing between brands, our best robot vacuum guide and our Roborock vs Roomba comparison are good next stops.

Price
around $1,199 (US list price, Sep 2026)
Suction
35,000 Pa (iRobot claim)

Dual-line LiDAR plus AI camera (ClearView Pro, PrecisionVision)
Self-emptying
Yes, bagged, up to 90 days
Mopping
Spinning roller mop with heated mist, lifts and shields on carpet
Dock wash
Hot water wash (176F) and warm air dry (131F)

Pros

  • iRobot's most powerful robot to date, according to the company
  • SealForce skirt is designed to seal the robot against carpet for deeper cleaning
  • Roller mop lifts and a shield drops over it on carpet, so rugs stay dry
  • Recognises more than 300 household objects, according to iRobot

Cons

  • Expensive next to Roborock and Dreame flagships with similar specs
  • Very new, so there is little long-term owner feedback yet
  • Carpet and suction claims are iRobot's own and not yet confirmed by independent labs

Verdict: The Max 875 Combo, launched on 2 September 2026, is iRobot's answer to the best Chinese flagships. On paper it closes most of the gap. Wait for independent lab results before paying full price, but it is the Roomba to shortlist if you want every feature.

Roomba Plus 678 Combo + AutoWash Dock
Best mopping value in the new range

Roomba Plus 678 Combo + AutoWash Dock

Best for: Homes with lots of hard floor and sticky kitchen spills

Price
around $899 (US list price, Sep 2026)
Suction
30,000 Pa (iRobot claim)
Navigation
Dual-line LiDAR plus AI camera
Self-emptying
Yes, up to 90 days
Mopping
Roller mop with high-pressure spray pre-treatment, 10 mm lift on carpet
Dock wash
Hot water wash and warm air dry

Pros

  • Most of the Max 875's features for $300 less
  • Spray pre-treatment aimed at dried-on stains
  • Same SealForce carpet design as the flagship

Cons

  • Mop lifts only 10 mm, with no carpet shield, so deep rugs may get damp
  • No pet-area priority setting in the app, according to iRobot's feature list
  • Too new for meaningful independent results

Verdict: If your home is mostly hard floor, the Plus 678 Combo looks like the smarter buy than the Max 875. The trade-off is a simpler mop lift. As with the 875, treat the performance claims as promises until labs report.

Roomba Max 775 Combo + AutoWash Dock
Best for hard-floor homes

Roomba Max 775 Combo + AutoWash Dock

Best for: Single-storey homes with mainly hard floors

Price
around $799 / £799 (Oct 2026)
Suction

Navigation
LiDAR plus AI obstacle camera
Self-emptying
Yes, up to 3 months
Mopping
Heated roller mop with lifting cover
Battery
6,000 mAh, about 180 minutes (Tom's Guide)

Pros

  • Dock empties, washes the mop at up to 75C and dries it, so maintenance is rare
  • Mop cover keeps carpets dry
  • Reviewers found the Roomba Home app easy to set up

Cons

  • Tom's Guide measured weak carpet pickup, roughly half the debris in one test
  • Loud, with side brushes that scatter debris
  • Tall and bulky, so it misses some low furniture

Verdict: Tom's Guide found the Max 775 Combo hard to recommend for everyone and suggested the Roborock Qrevo 2 Pro as stronger at a similar price. It makes most sense for hard-floor homes that like the design and want a long-lasting dock.

Roomba Max 715 Vac + AutoEmpty Dock
Best vacuum-only Roomba

Roomba Max 715 Vac + AutoEmpty Dock

Best for: Carpeted homes and pet owners who do not want a mop

Price
around $499 to $699 (US, Oct 2026)

Navigation
LiDAR plus AI obstacle camera
Self-emptying
Yes, AllergenLock bags, up to 3 months
Mopping
No

Pros

  • No mop to maintain, so the dock is smaller and simpler
  • Sealed bags suit allergy sufferers
  • Shares the 700 series navigation

Cons

  • iRobot gives suction only as a multiple, not in pascals
  • Little independent lab data so far

Verdict: Plenty of people never use a robot mop. The Max 715 is the cleanest way into the 2026 Roomba range for carpet-heavy homes, and it has been widely discounted to around $499 at iRobot.com.

Roomba Plus 575 Combo + AutoWash Dock
Best compact all-rounder

Roomba Plus 575 Combo + AutoWash Dock

Best for: Smaller homes and flats with tight spaces for a dock

Climbs up to 35 mm

Pros

  • Dock is 46% more compact, according to iRobot
  • Climbs higher door thresholds than many rivals
  • Obstacle-avoiding camera at a mid-range price

Cons

  • Suction is only quoted as a multiple
  • Faces strong competition from cheaper Roborock and Eufy docks

Verdict: The Plus 575 is the middle of the Roomba range and a sensible pick if dock size matters. Compare the price against the Roborock Qrevo 2 Pro before buying.

Roomba Plus 415 Combo + AutoWash Dock
Cheapest Roomba with a mop-washing dock

Roomba Plus 415 Combo + AutoWash Dock

Best for: First-time buyers who want hands-free mopping on a budget

Mopping

Pros

  • LiDAR mapping, so it cleans in neat rows and knows each room

Cons

  • No camera-based obstacle avoidance, so tidy cables and socks first
  • Pads are dried with warm air but not washed with hot water

Verdict: A reasonable entry point into self-washing docks. Budget rivals from Eufy and Dreame often add hot-water washing at a similar price, so shop around.

Roomba 105 Vac

Best for: Small homes and anyone who wants a basic daily sweep

Price
around $159 to $300 depending on retailer (US, Oct 2026)

Mopping

App
Roomba Home app

Pros

  • Often discounted heavily, below $200 at major US retailers
  • Simple to live with

Cons

  • Google Shopping review scores hover around 3.5 out of 5, lower than the newer models
  • Far fewer features than mid-range rivals

Verdict: Fine as a cheap daily crumb-catcher. If your budget stretches to $250 to $300, a self-emptying model from Roborock's Q series or Eufy usually offers more.

What happened to iRobot? The Roomba bankruptcy explained

Here is the short version, with dates and sources.

  1. August 2022: Amazon agreed to buy iRobot for about $1.7 billion.
  2. January 2024: the deal was abandoned. Amazon paid iRobot a $94 million break-up fee and iRobot cut about 31% of its staff, according to Wikipedia's summary of contemporary reporting. Gary Cohen became chief executive in May 2024 after co-founder Colin Angle left.
  3. 2025: iRobot's quarterly filings with the US Securities and Exchange Commission warned of substantial doubt about its ability to continue as a going concern (in plain terms, that it might not survive the next 12 months).
  4. 14 December 2025: iRobot filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in Delaware. It was a pre-packaged deal, meaning the buyer was agreed in advance. That buyer was Shenzhen PICEA Robotics, the Chinese company that already manufactured Roombas and was also iRobot's secured lender.
  5. 22 to 23 January 2026: the court confirmed the plan and iRobot emerged from bankruptcy as a private company wholly owned by Picea. Old shares were cancelled. Forkast reports that Picea converted roughly $254 million of debt into full ownership.

iRobot kept its headquarters in Bedford, Massachusetts, and its US engineering and product teams. It also created a US subsidiary called iRobot Safe, with an American-led board, to keep US and global customer data separate from the new non-US owner.

Does the FCC ban affect Roomba?

Yes, for future models sold in the United States. On 28 July 2026 the Federal Communications Commission (FCC, the US regulator for devices that use radio and Wi-Fi) added foreign-produced advanced robotic devices to its Covered List, according to law firm Wiley's summary. A device counts if it moves on its own, weighs more than 4.4 lb including its dock, and has sensors, network connectivity and autonomy software. Most robot vacuums fit that description.

  • Existing Roombas keep working. Models the FCC had already authorised can still be made, imported and sold.
  • Software updates continue. An FCC waiver allows security and firmware updates for already-authorised robots until at least 1 January 2029.
  • New models are the problem. New foreign-produced robots cannot get FCC authorisation unless the maker wins a Conditional Approval, which requires a plan to expand US manufacturing.

This rule applies to almost every brand, not just iRobot, because nearly all robot vacuums are built in Asia. As of mid-October 2026, Vacuum Wars reported that no robot vacuum brand had received a Conditional Approval. The rule is US only. Buyers in the UK, Europe and elsewhere are not affected.

Who a Roomba suits in 2026

  • Existing Roomba owners who like the app and want to stay in one ecosystem.
  • Buyers who value a long warranty. iRobot's UK product page lists a 2-year limited warranty on the Max 775 Combo.
  • Carpet-heavy homes on the 700 and 800 series, where iRobot's dual rubber brushes have historically done well. Check independent results first, though, because Tom's Guide found weak carpet pickup on the Max 775 Combo.

A Roomba suits you less if you want the most features per pound or dollar. Independent reviewers consistently find Roborock, Dreame and Eufy offer higher suction, hotter mop washing and better obstacle avoidance at similar prices. See our Roborock review and best robot vacuum and mop guide.

Roomba app, privacy and data

New Roombas use the Roomba Home app for maps, room-by-room cleaning, schedules and voice control through Alexa, Siri and Google Assistant, according to iRobot's 2026 launch materials. Reviewers at Tom's Guide found setup easy and maps quick to edit.

On privacy, the important change is ownership. iRobot is now owned by a Chinese company. Its stated safeguard is the iRobot Safe subsidiary, which has an independent American-led board and its own data security leadership. If data location matters to you, read the privacy policy in the app before you connect a camera-equipped robot to Wi-Fi, and keep firmware updated.

Support, warranty and spare parts

When it filed for bankruptcy, iRobot said it expected no disruption to app functionality, product support or supply chain relationships, as reported by Tom's Guide. Because Picea already built the robots, parts supply was not broken by the sale.

  • Warranty: the UK Max 775 Combo page lists a 2-year limited warranty. Terms can differ by country and model, so check the product page before buying.
  • Older models: classic models such as the i7+ and j7+ still appear at resellers. Buy older stock only at a deep discount, and confirm it is new with a valid warranty.
  • Long-term software: in the US, the FCC waiver protects updates for authorised devices until at least 1 January 2029.

How we assessed the Roomba line-up

We did not test these robots ourselves. We compared iRobot's published specifications, independent reviews (Tom's Guide, RTINGS, Reviewed and Vacuum Wars), Google Shopping review patterns and current retail prices. Where a figure is iRobot's own claim, we say so. We left out any spec we could not confirm.

Roomba verdict

iRobot is in better shape than many feared. It has a new owner, its debts were cleared and its 2026 models finally use LiDAR mapping and self-washing docks across the range. The Max 875 Combo and Plus 678 Combo look competitive on paper. But early independent reviews of the Max 775 Combo show iRobot still trails Roborock on cleaning per dollar, and US buyers should note that the FCC rule may slow future launches for every brand.

Our view: buy a Roomba if you find a strong discount on a 2026 model or you value the brand and warranty. Otherwise compare it with the Roborock and Dreame equivalents first.

Frequently asked questions

Is iRobot still in business?

Yes. iRobot filed for Chapter 11 in December 2025 and emerged on 23 January 2026 as a private company owned by Shenzhen PICEA Robotics. It still sells Roombas and launched new models in July and September 2026.

Who owns Roomba now?

Picea, the Chinese company that already manufactured Roombas, owns 100% of iRobot after the bankruptcy. iRobot kept its Bedford, Massachusetts headquarters and set up a US data subsidiary called iRobot Safe.

Will my Roomba stop working?

No. iRobot said during the bankruptcy that it expected no disruption to the app or support. In the US, the FCC also allows software updates for already-authorised robots until at least 1 January 2029.

Did the FCC ban Roombas?

Not existing ones. The July 2026 FCC rule blocks new authorisations for foreign-produced robots, which affects future models from nearly all brands. Robots already authorised can still be sold and used.

Is Roborock better than Roomba?

Independent reviewers usually find Roborock gives more suction, better mopping and better obstacle avoidance for the money. Roomba's newest models narrow the gap. See our Roborock vs Roomba comparison for details.

What is the average lifespan of a Roomba?

It depends on use and upkeep. Owners commonly report several years of service when brushes, filters and batteries are replaced as they wear. Batteries are the usual first part to fade.

Who invented the Roomba?

iRobot, founded in 1990 by MIT roboticists, launched the first Roomba in 2002.
