Pet hair is the job that separates good robot vacuums from average ones. Fur weaves into carpet, wraps round brushes and fills small bins fast. A robot that copes with dust and crumbs can still leave tufts behind, or stop mid-clean with a clogged roller.
We compared 2026 models using independent pet hair and hair-tangle results from RTINGS and Vacuum Wars, manufacturer specs, patterns in owner reviews and October 2026 prices. We have not tested these robots with our own pets, so we say where every claim comes from. If you also want mopping for muddy paw prints, see our vacuum and mop guide.

Verdict: The Omni C28 is the cheapest way to get proven pet hair pickup plus a self-washing roller mop. Keep floors clear of pet mess, as it lacks a camera to spot it.

6. Roborock Q7 M5+

- LiDAR mapping lets you target the rooms your pet sheds in
Cons
- Tom's Guide found the 400 ml bin fills quickly with heavy shedding
- Long human hair can still tangle the brush
- No camera, so it will not avoid pet mess
Verdict: The Q7 M5+ is the budget robot we would buy for a shedding pet. The dock makes the biggest difference, because emptying a fur-packed bin by hand every day is what puts owners off.
How we chose
We did not test these robots with our own pets. We ranked them using:
- Independent pet hair results. Vacuum Wars measures how much flattened pet hair a robot lifts from carpet and how much long hair wraps round the brush. RTINGS publishes its own pet hair rankings. These carried the most weight.
- Specs that matter for pets. Brush design, bin size, dock capacity and obstacle sensors, taken from brand pages.
- Owner review patterns. We looked for repeated complaints about clogged rollers, docks that fail to empty fur, and robots smearing pet mess.
- Price. October 2026 US and UK prices, which change often.
What to look for in the best robot vacuum for pet hair
Anti-tangle brushes. Rubber rollers or comb-style brushes stop fur wrapping round the roller. In Vacuum Wars' tests the average robot let about a quarter of long hair wrap; our top picks scored zero.
A self-emptying dock. Pet hair fills small bins in one run. A dock that sucks the fur into a sealed bag means you handle it every few weeks, not every day. This also helps if anyone at home has allergies.
Obstacle avoidance. A camera that recognises pet waste can save you from a nasty clean-up. Robots without one, such as the Eufy Omni C28 and Roborock Q7 M5+, are best run when you know the floor is clear.
Carpet performance. Fur sinks into carpet pile. If you have carpet, check carpet pet hair results, not just hard floor pickup.
Bin size. Bigger onboard bins mean fewer mid-clean trips back to the dock in heavy shedding season.
Robots to think twice about for pets
Cheap robots can still work for pets on hard floors, but watch the carpet results. Tom's Guide measured the Tapo RV30 Max Plus picking up 93.4% of pet hair on hardwood but only 67.8% on carpet. It is a great budget robot for hard floors, which is why it appears in our budget guide, but not here. Robots with bristle-only brushes and no self-emptying dock are also hard work in shedding season.
Are Roombas good for pet hair?
Roombas have long used rubber rollers, which handle fur well. iRobot launched new models in July 2026, including the Roomba Max 715 with an AutoEmpty dock. Early owner and reviewer feedback is mixed: Just a Dad Approved praised its obstacle avoidance and carpet cleaning but reported the dock not fully emptying the bin and long hair wrapping the rollers. With little independent lab data yet, we have left it off this list for now. Our Roomba guide has more.
Are robot vacuums worth it if you have pets?
For most pet owners, yes. A daily run stops fur building up into tumbleweeds, and a self-emptying dock means you rarely touch it. A robot will not replace a deep clean of thick carpet or upholstery, and some pets are nervous of them at first. Start with short runs while you are home, and schedule cleans for when your pet is out or settled. Read more in our guide to whether robot vacuums are worth it.
Tips to get better results with pets
- Run the robot daily in shedding season. Little and often beats one big weekly run.
- Pick up toys, cables and food bowls before a run, especially with robots that lack a camera.
- Clean the brush and check the side brush weekly. Fur can still collect at the ends.
- Replace filters on schedule. Clogged filters cut suction and make pet hair pickup worse.
- Use no-go zones round water bowls and litter trays.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good robot vacuum for pet hair?
In 2026 lab data, the Roborock Saros Z70 leads RTINGS' pet hair ranking, while the Ecovacs Deebot T90 Pro Omni scored 100% pet hair pickup and 0% tangles in Vacuum Wars testing at a lower price.
Are Roombas good for pet hair?
Roombas use rubber rollers that suit fur, but iRobot's newest 2026 models have little independent lab data so far, and early reviews of the Roomba Max 715 report hair wrapping and dock emptying issues.
Are robot vacuums worth it if you have pets?
Yes for most homes. Daily runs keep fur under control, and a self-emptying dock means you rarely handle it. You will still need a deep clean for thick carpet and furniture.
Do robot vacuums avoid dog poop?
Robots with a camera and AI object recognition, such as the Roborock Saros Z70 and Qrevo Edge 3 Pro, are built to recognise and steer round obstacles on the floor. Check each brand's pet waste claims before relying on it. Robots without a camera cannot reliably avoid it.
Is Shark or Roomba better for pet hair?
Both market pet-focused robots with self-emptying docks. Neither currently leads the independent pet hair rankings, which in 2026 are topped by Roborock, Ecovacs, Dreame and Eufy models.
What are the downsides of a robot vacuum with pets?
Small bins fill quickly, fur can wrap brushes on cheaper models, and robots without cameras may run over pet accidents. Some pets also chase or fear the robot at first.
