Carpet is the hardest surface for a robot vacuum. Dust and grit sink into the pile, pet hair weaves into the fibres, and thick rugs can stop a small robot in its tracks. Many robots that look great on hard floors fall behind here.

We compared 2026 models using RTINGS and Vacuum Wars carpet results, manufacturer specs, owner review patterns and October 2026 prices. We have not tested them on our own carpets. If your home is mostly hard floor, our hard floor guide is a better fit.

How we chose

We have not tested these robots on our own carpets. We ranked them using:

  • Carpet lab results. Vacuum Wars measures how much embedded sand a robot pulls from carpet, and RTINGS ranks robots specifically for carpet. These carried the most weight.
  • Specs. Suction, brush design, mop lift height and threshold climbing, taken from brand pages.
  • Owner review patterns. Repeated reports of robots getting stuck on rugs or soaking carpet edges.
  • Price. October 2026 US and UK prices.

What to look for in the best robot vacuum for carpet

Real carpet results, not just suction. A big pascal (Pa) figure helps, but brush design and airflow matter too. Check independent carpet scores where you can.

Rubber or anti-tangle rollers. Hair wraps round bristle brushes on carpet. Rubber rollers and comb designs keep suction working.

Mop lifting or removal. If you buy a combo, the robot must lift its mop or leave it in the dock, or it will wet your carpet. Compare the lift height (for example 11 mm on the Eufy Omni C28) with your rug pile.

Threshold climbing. Thick rugs and door strips can trap robots. Models like the Dreame X50 Ultra and Qrevo Edge 3 Pro lift their bodies to climb over.

Carpet boost. Most good robots raise suction automatically when they sense carpet. Make sure this setting is turned on in the app.

Do robot vacuums really work on carpet?

Yes, for daily upkeep. The best 2026 robots lift most surface dirt and pet hair from low and medium-pile carpet. Consumer Reports notes, though, that robots work best as a backup for embedded dirt in carpet rather than a full replacement for an upright vacuum. Expect to run a full-size vacuum now and then, especially on thick carpet.

Low-pile vs high-pile carpet

  • Low-pile (short, tight fibres) suits almost any decent robot.
  • Medium-pile needs strong suction and carpet boost. Our top three picks all suit it.
  • High-pile and shag rugs are tough. Long fibres can tangle brushes and stop the wheels. Choose a robot that climbs well, such as the Qrevo Edge 3 Pro, or block very deep rugs off in the app.

Robots that struggle on carpet

Some excellent hard-floor robots are weaker on carpet. Tom's Guide found the Dreame D10 Plus Gen 2 had weak carpet suction, and measured the Tapo RV30 Max Plus picking up only 67.8% of pet hair on carpet compared with 93.4% on hardwood. Both are good buys for hard floors, which is why they feature in our budget guide, but they are not carpet specialists.

Tips for better carpet cleaning

  • Turn on carpet boost or deep carpet mode in the app.
  • Run the robot more often. Daily runs stop grit working deep into the pile.
  • Tuck in rug tassels and fringes, or set no-go lines along them.
  • Clean the main roller weekly and replace filters on schedule.
  • Use a full-size vacuum every week or two for a deep clean.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best robot vacuum for carpet only?

For carpet-only homes, a strong vacuum-focused robot with anti-tangle rollers is ideal. On 2026 lab data, the Dreame X50 Ultra leads RTINGS' carpet ranking, and the Eufy Omni C28 is a strong value pick.

Do robot vacuums really work on carpet?

Yes for daily upkeep on low and medium-pile carpet. Consumer Reports notes robots are best as a backup for embedded dirt, so you will still need an upright occasionally.

What is the best vacuum for both carpet and hardwood floors?

The Ecovacs Deebot T90 Pro Omni is our mixed-floor pick, with above-average carpet results and excellent mopping in Vacuum Wars testing. For a premium option, the Dreame X50 Ultra handles both well.

Can a robot vacuum handle thick rugs?

Some can. Look for threshold climbing and mop removal. Roborock says the Qrevo Edge 3 Pro detaches its mops on carpet up to 1.81 in thick and climbs thresholds up to 1.77 in.

What are the downsides of a robot vacuum on carpet?

Robots can get stuck on deep pile and fringes, have smaller bins than uprights and cannot deep clean as thoroughly. Combos also risk wetting carpet if their mops do not lift high enough.

Is Shark or Roomba better on carpet?

Both brands sell robots with rubber rollers suited to carpet, but neither leads independent 2026 carpet rankings. Dreame, Eufy and Roborock models currently score highest.
