Stairs are the hardest problem in home robotics. Every mainstream robot vacuum has cliff sensors (downward-facing sensors that spot a drop), so it stops at the top of the stairs rather than falling. That keeps it safe, but it also means it cannot reach the next floor, and it certainly cannot clean the steps.
This page gives you the honest state of stair-climbing robots in October 2026, then picks the best robot vacuums for homes with more than one floor. The two usual approaches are carrying one robot between floors, or buying a cheaper robot for each floor. Both work well with the right model.

Verdict: Upstairs floors often have smaller rooms, more furniture and less dirt. A mini robot like the K11+ fits that job well, and SwitchBot says its dock bag lasts up to 90 days.
Best slim second robot
4. eufy C10
Best for: A low-cost robot for a second floor with low beds
- Price
- around $220 (Consumer Reports, Jul 2026); eufy US list price $479.99

Best for steps and future stair add-ons
5. Dreame X60 Max Ultra Complete
Best for: Homes with split levels, sunken rooms or tall door thresholds
- Price
- around $1,700 (Oct 2026, Dreame US store)

- Obstacle avoidance
- Two AI cameras, 280+ object types (manufacturer)
- Suction
- 35,000 Pa (manufacturer)
- Self-emptying
- Yes, about 100 days (manufacturer lab estimate)
Pros
- Climbs single steps far taller than most robots
- Reported to be the launch partner for Dreame's Cyber X stair module
- Flagship cleaning and dock
Cons
- Expensive
- Still cannot climb a full staircase on its own
Verdict: The X60 cannot climb stairs, but Dreame says it handles double steps up to 8.8 cm. That helps in homes with sunken living rooms or raised thresholds. Reports in 2026 also said Dreame's Cyber X stair carrier would work with the X60 series at launch.
How we chose
We have not tested these robots. Our editorial team chose the picks using manufacturer specs (especially how many floor maps a robot saves and how high it can climb), independent results from Consumer Reports and other reviewers, owner discussions about multi-storey homes, and October 2026 prices. For the stair-climbing products, we relied on launch coverage from CNET, PCMag, Vacuum Wars, Notebookcheck and others, and we say clearly where availability is unconfirmed.
Can a robot vacuum for stairs actually clean the steps?
Not yet in any mainstream product you can easily buy. Here is where things stand:
- Roborock Saros Rover. Shown at CES 2026, it uses wheel-legs to climb stairs and clean each step as it goes. CNET watched it climb and clean a staircase several times. Vacuum Wars described it as still in development, with no price or release date.
- Dreame Cyber X. A tracked carrier that a compatible robot drives onto, which then climbs the stairs. An updated version has small brushes that clean steps to a limited extent, per Notebookcheck. Dreame announced a €1,199 price for Europe, with sales expected around September 2026.
- eufy MarsWalker. A four-armed carrier for the eufy Omni S2, shown at IFA 2025 with a planned spring 2026 release. It moves the robot between floors but does not clean the stairs.
These are first-generation products. Expect high prices, limited compatibility and few independent reviews. If you want one, check the brand's site in your country for current availability.
Robot vacuum for stairs alternatives that work today
Owners of multi-storey homes usually pick one of two set-ups:
- Carry one robot. Keep the dock downstairs. When you want upstairs cleaned, carry the robot up and start it. A robot with multi-floor mapping keeps a separate map for each level, so it can clean room by room on every floor. Downsides: no auto-emptying upstairs, and you must remember to move it.
- One robot per floor. Buy a cheaper robot for each level, each with its own dock. It costs more up front but is truly hands-off. Many owners on robot vacuum forums prefer this.
For the stairs themselves, a cordless stick or handheld vacuum is still the quickest tool.
Carrying one robot or buying one per floor: the costs
Here is a simple way to compare the two set-ups using October 2026 prices:
- One mid-range robot, carried. A camera-equipped robot such as the Roomba Max 705 Vac cost about £279 in the UK. You pay once, but upstairs runs need you to move it, and it will not empty itself until it is back on its dock.
- Two budget robots, one per floor. Two Roborock Q10 S5+ robots at about $280 each come to roughly $560. Each floor gets its own dock and schedule, so nothing needs carrying.
- One premium robot plus a stair carrier. A Dreame X60 Max Ultra Complete at about $1,700 plus the Cyber X at a reported €1,199 is by far the most expensive route, and the carrier is brand new with few independent reviews.
For most families, two budget robots give the most hands-off result for the money. If your upstairs is mostly bedrooms that need cleaning once or twice a week, carrying one good robot is perfectly workable.
Do robot vacuums fall down stairs?
Very rarely. All the robots on this page use cliff sensors that detect a drop and turn back. Problems can happen with very dark carpets or black floors, which can confuse the sensors, and with open-backed or floating steps. Most apps let you draw a virtual wall or no-go zone at the top of the stairs for extra peace of mind. eufy, for example, suggests no-go zones for dark stairs in its C10 FAQ.
What to look for in a multi-storey robot vacuum
- Multi-floor maps. Look for at least three or four saved maps. iRobot says the Max 705 Vac stores five and Roborock says the Q10 S5+ stores four.
- Weight and handle. You will be carrying it, so lighter is easier.
- Battery life. Enough to finish a whole floor without returning to a dock that may be on another level.
- Threshold and step climbing. Useful for split-level homes. Dreame quotes up to 8.8 cm for double steps on the X60.
- Price. Two budget robots can beat one flagship. See our best budget robot vacuum guide.
Frequently asked questions
Can a robot vacuum do upstairs and downstairs?
Yes, if you carry it between floors. Many models save several maps, such as up to five on the Roomba Max 705 Vac. It cannot travel between floors on its own unless you add one of the new stair carriers.
Do any robot vacuums work on stairs?
Not as an everyday product yet. Roborock's Saros Rover can climb and clean stairs but was still in development in 2026. Dreame's Cyber X carrier cleans steps only to a limited extent.
Which robot vacuum cleaner is best for cleaning stairs?
None of the mainstream robots can clean stairs today. For stairs, a cordless or handheld vacuum is still the best tool. For the floors themselves, a robot with multi-floor mapping, like the Roomba Max 705 Vac, works well.
Do robot vacuums fall down stairs?
Rarely. Cliff sensors detect the drop and turn the robot around. Dark carpet and open-backed stairs can cause problems, so add a no-go zone at the top of the stairs if in doubt.
How much does a stair climbing robot vacuum cost?
Dreame announced its Cyber X carrier at €1,199 in Europe, on top of a compatible robot. Roborock had not announced a price for the Saros Rover at the time of writing.
Should I buy one robot or one per floor?
If you want it fully hands-off, one per floor. If you are happy to carry it, one robot with multi-floor maps saves money.
