Unitree R1 Review 2026: What the $4,900 Humanoid Can Really Do

The short answerThe Unitree R1 is a 123 cm walking humanoid robot that starts at $4,900 for the R1 Air and $5,900 for the standard R1, excluding tax and shipping (Unitree, October 2026). It is shipping now, including in the UK from £8,038.80 with VAT. It is a programmable learning and demo robot, not a household helper.

The Unitree R1 is the robot that brought humanoids within reach of individuals and schools. At under $6,000 it is a full-body robot that runs, cartwheels and gets up after falls, not a toy kit.

We have not tested an R1. This review relies on Unitree's specifications and store prices (checked 26 October 2026), UK and US retailer listings, launch coverage from the South China Morning Post and TechEBlog, and owner unboxing reports. What is the Unitree R1?

The R1 is Unitree's smallest and cheapest full-body humanoid robot. Unitree first sold it in mainland China in 2025 from 29,900 yuan, then launched it internationally in 2026. The South China Morning Post reported in April 2026 that it would go on sale globally through Alibaba's international site, and TechEBlog reported US deliveries arriving in late June 2026.

It stands 123 cm tall, about the height of a seven-year-old, and weighs 27 to 29 kg. It can walk, run, keep its balance when pushed, get up after a fall and perform acrobatics such as cartwheels in Unitree's videos.

Unitree R1 price: Air vs R1 vs EDU

Unitree lists three versions:

  • R1 Air, $4,900: 20 degrees of freedom (independently moving joints), a single camera and a 6-month warranty. The cheapest way in.
  • R1, $5,900: 26 degrees of freedom, a stereo (binocular) camera for depth, and an 8-month warranty. Better for anything involving the arms.
  • R1 EDU, by quote: up to 40 degrees of freedom with optional dexterous hands and an Nvidia Orin computer for running your own AI. One widely viewed unboxing put a fully specified R1 EDU at $29,756.

In the UK, RobotShop UK listed the R1 Basic at £8,038.80 including VAT on 26 October 2026, built to order with shipping in 3 to 4 weeks. Its listing mentions EU and US variants, so confirm the plug and charger before ordering. US resellers list the R1 Basic from about $8,990, well above Unitree's own price.

What can the Unitree R1 do?

Out of the box, the R1 walks, runs, balances, stands up after falls, waves, dances and performs preset routines. It has a microphone array and speaker for voice interaction, and Unitree markets AI voice and image recognition features.

With an EDU version, schools and developers can program new movements and connect it to their own AI models. That is where its real value lies: it is a low-cost body for learning robotics.

It cannot do useful household chores. Its arms are light, its hands on the base model are simple, and an hour of battery is a short session. One owner's widely shared unboxing in October 2026 showed how quickly a new R1 can bump into walls in a small room, so give it space.

Unitree R1 vs G1: which is better value?

The R1 costs $4,900 to $5,900, weighs under 30 kg and runs about an hour. It has cameras but no LiDAR. It is the better buy for learning, demos, content creation and classrooms.

The G1 starts at $13,500, adds 3D LiDAR and a depth camera, doubles battery life to about 2 hours and has a larger research community. It is the better buy for university labs and AI research. Read our Unitree G1 review for detail.

Both need the EDU version for serious programming, so compare EDU quotes, not just base prices.

Is Unitree better than Optimus?

They are not really competitors yet. Unitree's robots are on sale today, from $4,900 for the R1, and Unitree shipped thousands of humanoids in the first half of 2026. Tesla Optimus has no price or pre-order: Tesla said on 22 October 2026 that early production had started at Fremont, with deliveries to outside companies expected around the end of 2027. Optimus is designed as a full-size worker, while the R1 is a small learning platform. See our Tesla Optimus guide.

Before you buy an R1

  • Buy spare batteries. Unitree sells R1 batteries for $500 each, and you will want at least one.
  • Check the version on the invoice. Air and R1 look alike but differ in joints and camera.
  • Plan the space. A 29 kg robot falling on a child, pet or glass door can do damage. Use a clear, soft-floored area.
  • Expect a learning curve. Owners describe setup as simple but programming as demanding.
  • UK buyers: a UK listing including VAT avoids import surprises; see buying a humanoid robot in the UK.

Verdict: is the Unitree R1 worth it?

For a school, a maker or anyone who wants to learn humanoid robotics by building and coding, the R1 is the standout value of 2026: a real, shipping, acrobatic humanoid for under $6,000. Just be clear what you are buying. It is a programmable platform with an hour of battery, not a robot butler. If you want help around the house, single-task robots such as robot vacuums will do far more for far less.
